Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU), also known as Beiwai, is a national key university directly under the Ministry of Education of China. It is one of the first universities in China to be included in the "211 Project" and "985 Project Innovation Platform". The university was founded in 1941 as the Russian Language Team of the Third Branch of the Chinese People's Anti-Japanese Military and Political University in Yan'an, later developing into the Central Military Commission Russian Language School and Yan'an Foreign Language School. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, the school was under the leadership of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In 1954, it was renamed Beijing Foreign Language Institute, and in 1959, it merged with Beijing Russian Language Institute to form a new Beijing Foreign Language Institute. In 1994, it was officially renamed Beijing Foreign Studies University. The university is the oldest, most comprehensive, and most prestigious foreign language university in China, known as the "Cradle of Diplomats of the Republic". The university has two campuses (East and West) and consists of 19 schools and departments, offering 101 undergraduate programs covering 8 disciplines: literature, economics, management, law, education, history, science, and engineering.
