University of Science and Technology Beijing (USTB), also known as "Beike", is a national key university directly under the Ministry of Education, focusing on engineering while coordinating the development of engineering, science, management, liberal arts, economics, and law. Its history can be traced back to the first metallurgy discipline in modern Chinese history, established by the Beiyang Western School in 1895. In 1952, it was formed by the metallurgy departments of six prestigious domestic universities including Tianjin University (formerly Beiyang University) and Tsinghua University, named Beijing Iron and Steel Institute, the first iron and steel industry institution of higher learning established in New China. In 1960, it was renamed Beijing Iron and Steel Institute and approved as a national key institution of higher learning. In 1984, it became one of the first batch of institutions to formally establish a graduate school. In 1988, it was renamed University of Science and Technology Beijing. In May 1997, the university was among the first batch to enter the national "211 Project" construction. In 2006, it became one of the first batch of "985 Project" Advantage Discipline Innovation Platform construction universities. In 2014, the "Steel Common Technology Collaborative Innovation Center" led by the university successfully entered the national "2011 Plan". In 2017, the university was selected as a national "Double First-Class" construction university. In 2018, the university was approved as a co-construction university by the State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense and the Ministry of Education. Over more than 70 years since its establishment, the university has gradually formed the school motto spirit of "Seeking Truth and Innovation", the fine tradition of "Rigorous Study Style and Advocating Practice", and the new characteristics of the new era Beike spirit of "Pursuing Excellence and Daring to Take the Lead", cultivating more than 320,000 talents for society, many of whom have become pillars and backbones in the fields of national politics, economy, science and technology, education, especially in the metallurgy and materials industries. The university is located on Xueyuan Road, Haidian District, Beijing, covering an area of about 803,900 square meters (including Guanzhuang Campus), with a total building area of 970,000 square meters (including Guanzhuang Campus). In terms of discipline construction, the university's Materials Science and Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering and other 4 disciplines have entered the national world-class discipline construction. In the fourth round of discipline evaluation by the Ministry of Education, 25 disciplines participated in the evaluation, of which 16 disciplines entered the top 30%.Show More
