Programme Structure
Management
- The world is undergoing a tremendous upheaval. Organisations around the world are affected by technological advancements, economic integration, ethical turmoil and economic crises. Managing an organisation has become more challenging (and exciting) than ever before. This module is designed to develop students’ understanding of key management theories/concepts and issues affecting managers. It begins with the explanation of the term ‘management’ and the value of studying management before turning to the key functions of a manager. The four key management functions – planning, organising, leading and controlling – are discussed in detail to provide students an overview of the activities performed by a typical manager. Managers exist in all organisations regardless of their size, kind and location. By studying management, students can gain insight into the way managers behave, how organisations function, and what concepts one could adopt and adapt to be an effective manager in practice.
Macroeconomics
- This module introduces students to relevant macroeconomic concepts and principles. Students will develop macroeconomic models and recognise the interdependence of important components of a macro economy. At the end of the module, students will be able to analyse and report the causes and consequences of economic growth, inflation and unemployment, and formulate appropriate macroeconomic policies for a stable economy.
Business Decision Making
- Business Decision Making is an introductory module in qualitative and quantitative methods which underpin effective business decision making. The module develops students’ ability to incorporate statistical thinking and to take account of variation in the real-world during processes of establishing project initiatives, defining objectives, data collection, data presentation, data analyses, reporting and decision making.
Project Management
- Project management theory, terms and concepts are introduced in this module. Students will discover the project life cycle and learn how to build and implement a successful project. It will introduce project management topics such as resources, costs, time constraints and project scopes.
Service Operations Management
- Unlike manufacturing, services require "co-production" activities between the customer and the service provider. Services are not transferable, cannot be stored, and service operations have perishable capacity. As such, operations systems should be designed with careful consideration of the characteristics of services, which are more "people-centric". This might pose challenges in managing service systems, and in identifying and/or measuring the effectiveness and efficiencies of service operations. The module is designed to introduce the key elements of service operations management with the aim of meeting/exceeding customer expectations. At the end of the module, students will gain a good understanding of service operations management principles, concepts and best practices.
Supply Chain Management
- The objective of this module is to provide students with an appreciation and understanding of strategic and tactical issues in supply chain management. The supply chain is regarded as one of the last frontiers for further efficiency improvements. Today, companies operate in far-flung countries with the objective of identifying cheaper sources for parts and components, and to broaden the market for their finished products. The supply chains of companies have therefore become longer and the cost of managing the supply chain now accounts for a significant percentage of the sales dollar. Topics in this module include supply chain analytics, inventory management, warehousing, supply chain integration and direct-to-customer logistics.
Business Logistics Management
- Companies need to work closely with their business partners to achieve their supply chain efficiency and effectiveness. Logistics has become central and vital to a functioning business. Integrated supply chain and logistics management is thus becoming recognised as a core competitive strategy. This module will cover the fundamental changes and trends in the world economy that have been brought about by e-commerce and supply chains. Students will develop an understanding of why and how a good supply chain and logistics management can have a competitive advantage, and appreciate concepts and issues in logistics management, to provide analytical tools and techniques for the design and evaluation of logistics solutions.
Marketing
- It is well known that the financial success of an organisation depends on its marketing ability. One can argue that other business functions do not really matter so long as there is sufficient demand for the firm’s goods and services. To be a marketer, one must know what marketing is, how it works, what is marketed and who does the marketing. This module aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the famous 4Ps and marketing tools that are commonly used by decision makers to retain and increase customer satisfaction and shareholders value. Students will have the opportunity to apply and reiterate the concepts learnt by means of a group project. Throughout the module, students will be encouraged to relate the subject contents to the marketing efforts that are put in place by ‘real’ firms, thus creating the opportunity to appreciate how concepts are put into practice.
Industrial Attachment
- This work placement aims to provide students with the opportunity to integrate theory with practical experience and to obtain the knowledge, skills and abilities that will be useful for their career in the logistics field. Other than acquiring professional work ethics, students will have the opportunity to get accustomed to the various real-life situations that they are likely to face in the logistics and supply chain management fields.
